One of the bigger surprises for hip-hop this year was the release plan for J. Cole's third studio album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, which is in stores today and available for purchase on iTunes. Cole kept his album plans close to his chest for most of the year while he worked on the 13-song project that doesn't include any featured artists, and has additional production from DJ Dahi, Illmind, Cardiak, and more.
Cole spoke in-depth about the album, and much more in the December/January 2015 cover story for Complex, which you can read in full here. With the release of the project on iTunes, 2014 Forest Hills Drive has also become available to stream via Spotify, which you can do so below.
North Carolina rapper J. Cole visited Ferguson, Missouri, to demand justice for Michael Brown and protested in New York for Eric Garner – but none of that political fire burns on his third album. Cole still can’t separate his interest in world issues from what’s in his pants: He speaks some incisive truths about class, race (“Fire Squad”) and relationships (“Wet Dreamz”), but those insights are too often undercut by crass humor. (“No Role Modelz” includes the faux-clever refrain “She shallow but the pussy deep.”) The production falls short, too, with dull beats to match his languid flow. It’s time for the Cole who marches in the streets to start showing up on record.

J. Cole earns his first million-selling album in the U.S., as his chart-topping 2014 Forest Hills Drive has surpassed a million copies sold, according to Nielsen Music. The set’s cumulative sales rose past the threshold in the week ending Sept. 3, as it sold another 6,000 copies, bringing its total to 1.004 million.
The album was released in December of 2014 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming his third consecutive No. 1. It continues to rules has the rapper’s biggest selling set. His previous album Born Sinner (released in 2013) has sold 747,000 while his first set, Cole World: The Sideline Story (released in 2011) has sold 772,000.
2014 Forest Hills Drive has generated five entries on the Hot Rap Songs chart: “Apparently” (peaking at No. 10), “Wet Dreamz” (No. 12), “No Role Modelz” (No. 18), “Fire Squad” (No. 24) and “A Tale of 2 Citiez” (No. 25). Velli malare song.
He’s also currently topping the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart, but with a song that isn’t on his album: Janet Jackson’s “No Sleeep.” He’s the featured guest on track, which has spent three nonconsecutive weeks atop the list (and crowns the Sept. 26-dated list).
